Helen Zia Author, Social Activist
Among many important events in Asian-American politics, Helen Zia was one of the leaders of the movement to protest and seek justice against the vicious killing of Vincent Chin in Detroit by two Caucasian laid off auto workers, in 1982. Could this tragedy be even more devasting to Chin's mother and all Asian-Americans? Even though the assialants were convicted, the judge's punishment was that the two men were placed on three-years probation and fined $3,000. Zia wrote one the most comprehensive books on Asian-American history "American Dreams" which should be the standard textbook in all Asian Studies courses. She was also active in the defense of Dr. Wen Ho Lee; co-authoring "My Country Versus Me." |
